CDN’s “Moment of Light” Recipients of $500
Karissa Keddy – Karissa has just received the heartbreaking news that her grandmother is
struggling with dementia in Nova Scotia. Despite her own financial
struggles, Karissa’s heart longs to be with her grandmother over the
Christmas holidays, a trip that would bring immense joy and comfort to
both. Karissa’s extraordinary kindness and generosity have inspired
countless individuals in her community, and now she needs a helping
hand to make this unforgettable journey home. Would you consider
helping Karissa purchase a ticket to visit her beloved grandmother,
perhaps for the last time, this holiday season?
Jessica Cooper – Hi there, my name is Chelcie. I’m nominating my best friend, Jessica.
There are many reasons why I think Jess is a great candidate for a
moment of light. In particular, Jessica is a full-time Nursing student, and a
full-time single mom to three beautiful children. She has always put people
before her own needs, and has dedicated her future career to doing what
she does best, which is caring for those around her. Being a full-time
student with limited income, the Christmas season is particularly stressful.
Despite the challenges she has faced thus far, and losses throughout the
last two years she remains resilient and focused on achieving her goals.
Her selfless spirit shines through in her passion for caring for others, and
she always finds a way to support local charities when she can, even with
her struggles. She truly deserves this moment of light as she is an
inspiration to others around her.
Marcy McGregor – She is the hardest-working woman in the community! She works for 10
months a year or more preparing and getting her greenhouse and garden
ready to supply all her friends with fresh veggies. And she supports lots of
local charities in town.
She is the most generous selfless woman I’ve ever met. Marcy is a very
special human and we are so lucky to have her in our community. Always
giving to help homeless single parents seniors and friends she grows a
very big greenhouse and garden. She starts her plants in February in the
house and puts them in the greenhouse. She has to start the fire in the
middle of the night Stoke it to make sure it doesn’t go out so the plants
don’t freeze. She gets up at about 2 o’clock in the morning every night for
a couple of months she grows thousands and thousands of plants, flowers
and vegetables. She gives everyone and anyone she knows all their
flowers. She won’t take any money. All she wants is a bag of dirt to start
the seeds. She grows a huge garden plant 1100 hills of potatoes, huge
big, long roses of carrots, beets, turnips, green beans yellow beans,
hundred different kinds of squash and gives it all away. She used to give
to the SPCA so they could sell it and make money for their food for their
animals. then she gave to the seniors so they could have fresh stuffed
vegetables and now she gives to the Salvation Army or any single mom
that wants to message her. She will bring vegetables to and all her friends
and won’t take any money for any of it. She just likes helping people. She
is my great friend if there were more people like her would be a great
community. She loves helping people she loves the social part of it. She
works very, very hard weeding, inhaling and looking after her plants her
greenhouse is full of tomatoes. She grows broccoli, cauliflower green
beans, peas, lettuce, and dill all in her greenhouse so she has it before the
garden is ready. She is a very considerate person with a big heart. I
believe she deserves some recognition.
Hannah Kuusisaari – Hannah has been a very active member of the FSJ Women’s Resource
Society since 2006. She sat as treasurer for many years, and then after
her term was over, has sat on the financial committee to still offer her
knowledge and support. The last few years have been hard on Hannah
due to complications with her health. She has struggled the last year
making choices between her bills or her medications. I would love to see
her receive a surprise that could make a huge difference for her this
Christmas season. Thank you for creating this opportunity for someone
who has given to their community, to be given a helping hand back.
Brad Small – He has always gone above and beyond for my family and the community.
One story, for example, my sister and her family lost their house in a fire.
The 4 of them moved in with me. I called Brad, the owner of Brad’s
furniture and appliances cause I needed a bed for them, it was a Sunday.
He was out camping and left there to meet me. He GAVE me a bed for
them! I tried to pay but he wouldn’t let me. His heart is huge. I think there a
lot of people that own businesses that don’t get recognized like they
should. Because as some people would say “They have money, they don’t
need this” I believe anyone with a big heart should be rewarded.
Jessica Lane – My daughter works hard to take care of me her mother with Multiple
Sclerosis and her daughter who is type 1 Diabetic- if she isn’t home
cleaning, she Is working, and if she isn’t working she is volunteering her
time to stuff 50 stockings for her co worker, knowing that this year she will
have a little less under her own tree for her kid because she just can’t
swing it this year, and afford her January rent too. This money would truly
help her and her daughter to have a wonderful stress free Christmas.
Ruby Ghostkeeper – Ruby is one of the hardest worker she goes over beyond to help people.
Right now she’s going through medical issues she can’t work right now.
Her husband is at home to take care of her they are struggling to get
Xmas gifts for there 3 kids this year, help with food…hard times. They can
really use this for Christmas.
Bev Debolt – Bev is an outstanding Co-Worker, mentor and friend. She works full time,
she is currently doing her practicum to get her degree, and essentially she
is a poor student. Our boss gave us all 500$ bonus for Christmas and
she joked saying “Now I can buy groceries and eat well this week”, but
she’s not joking. She is struggling right now, and to make matters worse,
her dog just had surgery last week and completely drained her banking
account, she just got married this year AND, her husband’s business went
under because someone was stealing from them. She deserves this 500$
more than a lot of people I know.
Emily Lloyd – Emily is an amazing person that is so deserving of light this season. She
is a teacher at one of our elementary schools and is such a genuine, kind
person to everyone. She puts her all into providing a nurturing and
enriching learning environment for her students. She is currently
upgrading courses to further her degree, including taking courses on
inclusive teaching- while working full time, and being a mother, wife, and
active member within her church community. I feel that Emily could benefit
from some light and is the most deserving person for a surprise like this.
She works very hard in every area of her life and always puts others first.
Jamie Parsons – This has been a challenging year for Jamie. She became ill this year with
pneumonia and pericarditis. Sadly it was untreated despite multiple
attempts to get medical assistance until it became life-threatening. Jamie
doesn’t drive and walks to work at Shoppers Drug Mart and it was taking
her 45 minutes to walk to work. Jamie volunteers a lot of her time to
various non-profit organizations around Fort St. John. She is extremely
passionate about the Fort St. John Women’s Resource Society
(FSJWRS). You will frequently see her doing a fundraiser or food drive on
her days off at Shoppers Drug Mart to benefit the clients at the Fort St.
John Women’s Resource Society. Every fall Jamie has tirelessly applied
for the Gift of Flight from Westjet to do a raffle for the FSJWRS except this
year. The weekly trips to the hospital for bloodwork and multiple chest
X-rays to monitor the progress of the pneumonia left her exhausted. She
had to have several courses of antibiotics and as of today is finally starting
to get some energy back. She feels terrible that she was not able to bring
in $10k for the FSJWRS not to mention the other food drives she normally
does. She took extra sick time from work and her bills got behind so now
she is playing catch up. This is an especially difficult time of year as it will
be the one year anniversary of her father’s passing on December 19.
Jamie has to deal with some not-so-special customers at Christmas and
she often says she is done “peopling” as it is mentally exhausting. On
December 22 it is Jamie’s birthday and I really would like her to know that
people do care about how she feels and whether she is in a good place.
For many years she has dedicated herself to helping others it is only time
the tables are turned and she gets to experience that kindness and love
for herself. Today, I drove around with her to pick up all of the food
donations that were made during the shop local event last week. It is an
honour to volunteer with Jamie. She is humble kindhearted and a force of
nature.
Sara Carroll – Sara has taken it upon herself to create homemade baking trays for those
who might not get a lot this Christmas. She has so humbly asked to
remain anonymous to the recipients and to just spread the love and
Christmas cheer. Sara is a wife, mom, sister and friend. I would love to
help cover the cost of her baking and show her some Christmas magic.
It’s not just Christmas time Sara helps. She’s a real life angel. She works
so hard and volunteers so much of her time to children and youth in the
community. You can find her teaching youth boxing or volunteering for non
profit organizations. Sara has never asked for anything in return, except
the hope that she is able to bring a smile to the people she serves.
Please consider Sara, she is so deserving!
Aimee Zamko – My mom, Aimee, deserves a Moment of Light recognition for the incredible
strength, compassion, and selflessness she has shown during one of the
hardest times in our lives. She made the difficult decision to leave her
career behind to care for her dying mother full-time, and that decision
speaks volumes about who she is as a person—someone who puts love
and family above all else.
Watching her care for my grandmother with so much patience and grace
has been both heartbreaking and inspiring. My mom has faced every
challenge with unwavering courage, ensuring that my grandma feels
comforted, valued, and deeply loved in her final chapter.
Her sacrifice and dedication have reminded me of the power of
unconditional love and the importance of showing up for the people who
matter most. Even amidst her own pain, my mom continues to be a source
of light and strength for me and everyone around her.
She inspires me every day to live with purpose, love fiercely, and give
selflessly. My mom truly embodies what it means to be a light in the lives
of others, and I couldn’t be prouder of her.
