Energeticcity.ca has been awarded a grant to expand and upgrade our federal election coverage this April.
The 2025 Canadian Federal Election was called on March 23rd with final voting day happening on April 28th. As a local news organization located in Fort St John, we will be covering the Prince George – Peace River – Northern Rockies riding.
We are excited to announce we have received a grant from the Public Policy Forum, the Rideau Hall Foundation, and the Michener Awards Foundation to expand our coverage.
The Prince George – Peace River – Northern Rockies riding covers an area of 249,110 km² and stretches from Valemount to the Yukon border. While our goal is to report on the riding as a whole, we would usually only be able to physically attend election events happening in Fort St. John or Dawson Creek.
Now, thanks to the Covering Canada: Election 2025 fund, we will be able to attend all-candidate forums happening throughout the riding.
Many of the communities in this area are distinct, with their own priorities and outlook due to their unique industries, landscape and history. For example, the election issues most important to people living in the city of Prince George will look completely different to the most pressing matters in northerly Fort Nelson.
By being able to attend an all-candidate forum, we can learn more about what matters to potential voters and provide more information on the candidates in our riding to help people be more informed when they decide to vote.
With the grant, our plan is to send our civics reporter and assistant news director Caitlin Coombes to communities throughout the riding.
She will then attend any forums that happen, report on the responses from candidates and learn more about the unique issues each community is concerned about.
We will then use this information to create a tool that will help voters make a more informed decision on who they want to represent them federally.
